Methodology & Sources

Data Sources

Coverage: FY 2023-24 | Last updated: 2025-06

Methodology

Parity ratios are calculated by dividing the Public Defender budget by the District Attorney budget for each county. Attorney ratios are similarly calculated. Budget data is sourced from county adopted budgets for FY 2023-24. Charging patterns and decline rates are derived from California DOJ Criminal Justice Statistics Center data and county-level reporting.
